Ella Sri Lanka

Ella is a laid-back hill-country town in Sri Lanka, surrounded by emerald tea plantations, forested peaks and cool mountain air. It’s a wonderful place to slow down, enjoy the scenery and explore on foot. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, with cafés and small restaurants serving local dishes alongside international favourites. One of Ella’s best-known sights is the Nine Arch Bridge, an elegant railway viaduct set among lush hills. Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to admire its stone arches and, if you’re lucky, watch a train cross. For sweeping views, hike to Little Adam’s Peak; the trail is relatively accessible and especially beautiful at sunrise or sunset. Ella is also an ideal base for exploring the region’s tea-growing landscape. Take a scenic train ride through the hill country, visit a tea factory to learn how Ceylon tea is made, or set off on a longer walk to Ella Rock. The latter is more challenging, so wear sturdy shoes and allow plenty of time. Pack a light layer for cool evenings, and bring comfortable walking shoes for the trails. Ella can get busy, particularly during peak travel periods, so consider starting popular hikes early in the day. Whether you come for the mountain views, railway journeys or peaceful tea gardens, Ella offers a memorable glimpse of Sri Lanka’s highlands.
